JACEK KARCZEWSKI
Polish Birds
Chairman and CEO
Among his other duties, Jacek looks after social communication and development of Polish Birds.
These are also his main tasks in the Project. Apart from managing the organisation itself he is also involved in other projects – “Wetlands Work Wonders!” and ‘Yes! Campaign”.
He has published many articles, also in the popular Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza. He regularly appears on radio – most often on TOK FM. He has been an active and successful conservationist for many years. A psychologist by education, he is also an experienced Human Resources specialist and trainer. He claims to have been born in a goose nest, he is a passionate bird-watcher and loves all things birdy.
GRZEGORZ MACIOROWSKI
Eagel Conservation Committee
Science Coordinator
PAWEŁ SIDŁO
Polish Birds
Scientific consultant
He is also involved in the other LIFE+ project implemented by Polish Birds: “Wetlands Work Wonders!” as a Specialist for Monitoring Ecological Outcome.
Educated as a biologist, he has also studied European and English law as a post-graduate.
He supports us in this project with his knowledge, practice and experience won during many international training visits in such fields as Natura 2000, cooperation with local stake holders, agri-environmental schemes and project management (BirdLife International, RSPB/UK, DOF/Denmark). When he is not working he is photographing. Mainly nature. At work and after work he has always been interested in functioning and conservation of wetlands – in other words, he’s the right guy in the right place!
JAN LONTKOWSKI
Eagle Protection Committee
Scientific consultant
Jan has always been interested in birds. This passion almost derailed him at school as he preferred to watch migrating birds rather than stay in classrooms. In spite of this handicap, he managed to complete his studies with a Masters in biology.
He was one of the co-founders of the Eagle Protection Committee. His responsibility in the organisation is the conservation of the birds of prey. He has taken part in drafting conservation plans for the Białowieża and Biebrza National Parks. He is a long-standing member of the Fauna Commission of the Polish Zoological Society. In his spare time he enjoys…. birdwatching and travelling (to watch birds!). He relaxes to music.
EWA WIATR
Biebrza National Park
Education actions of the Project
Ewa organises workshops for schools and at educational events.
She is the editor and co-author of school lessons scenarios about Greater Spotted Eagle for teachers. She has worked for the Biebrza National Park for 12 years.
She completed her Master’s in forestry and teaching. She is a field guide in the Biebrza National Park.
Since 2000 she has edited “Our Biebrza” – a magazine for young people published by the National Park. Ewa is also a co-author of guidebooks and information boards.
She enjoys traditional folklore and culture.
EMILIA SOKOŁOWSKA
Polish Birds
Administrative Assistant
Emilia is the right-hand woman of the Coordinator.
She lives in Grajewo in North-East Poland and cannot image life elsewhere. She was missing Biebrza during her studies in Warsaw (naturally, she completed her master’s in Environmental Conservation). To write her thesis she spent many weeks in the Biebrza National Park watching koniks.
She spent a year with the National Park in the Scientific Research Monitoring Department after which she discovered her destiny – Polish Birds.
She reads excessively. Her life is filled with nature conservation but her true passion is her black Labrador called – unsurprisingly – Nigra.
ANNA PILARSKA
Polish Birds
PR and Social Communication
Anna comes from Mazury in the North-East Poland.
She studied English at Wrocław University and American Studies at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow. As a postgraduate she completed a course for translators at the Unesco faculty in Cracow.
She has supplemented her formal education by attending many courses on social communication, project management and corporate responsibility.
In order to turn her environmental concerns into more practical actions, she left her life in Cracow and joined Polish Birds where she found people passionate about conservation and good prospects of personal development.
After spending her days in stressful fights for the last stretches of wild nature, she finds peace of mind in various sports and dogs training which she attends in the company of her Labrador called Axa.

He continues to work at the Botany Department of the University of Białystok. His interests include birds of prey and nature conservation.
MICHAŁ ZYGMUNT

He’s still developing his interests listening to his colleagues at the Eagle Protection Committee. He comes from Brodnica, a town situated among pretty lakes and forests which inspired him to become involved in conservation. In his free time, he goes cycling or trekking in forests to watch wildlife. He is the youngest member of the team with heaps of enthusiasm and optimism.
